A month ago or so I posted a bunch of testing we did at Igniter with our new Canon 7d. The videos are finally out now and I’m happy to share them with you guys. Rob and Jeff wrote the scripts. I was the lead for the project – meaning I directed, chose actors, and established the look for the videos. David Womack was the shooter and Jenni Wright kept organized the whole thing for us so that it would be a good experience for our actors. I’ve become numb to the project at this point as I have seen it a million times. I keep noticing little things I wish I could change. Oh well. I’m pleased considering I rarely do video projects that have no motion work associated with it. I have a lot to learn about the 7d and look forward to gaining experience with it.

Real nice Barton… real nice. I especially like that each segment is completely separated from the others audio wise, allowing them to be shown scattered throughout a service or event.

Shots that stood out for me:

I love the shot at :24… perhaps because it's the first tight shot of a mouth it seems to carry more power than any of the other similar shots.

I love the lookaway at :58

I love the lady's chuckle at 2:21… very well done. The whole video was very well acted.

I love the sound fx at 2:48.

I'm not as big a fan of the shot at 1:45… it just feels odd because no other shots have that angle of view.

I really like the truck moves you've used in the video… was that a tripod mounted slider? Real nice.

Thanks for your work on this great video.

Mark. Thanks for the comments. Yes. The videos are sold separately on Igniter. The idea being that they would be used a different moments rather than back to back. I asked for them to be back to back on Vimeo for preview because I figured people would continue watching rather than click 6 different videos. ;-)

The "truck moves" were surprisingly super basic. Simply a pan on the tripod! Hard to believe, huh?

How did you do that effect when the shot speeds up after they are finished saying something?

    • Barton Damer says:

It's basically just speeding up the clip. I added some blurring in After Effects with some light flashes but that's about it.

    • Barton Damer says:

Kyle, those were simply just sped up to like 1000% and I added some light flashes and motion blurr.

great stuff man… and a shout out to trent!!!! i knew he was sin…

  13. Kyle Reed says:

coo, I was wondering if you used a plugin in After Effects. But I figured that is what you did.
Did you just turn the camera at different angles to get some different shots?
Sorry for the questions, I just think that part was awesome.

  14. Barton Damer says:

You know what… I think I did the blurs with custom Twitch settings.

  15. Kyle Reed says:

well I am glad you are doing these features because I am seriously thinking about getting this camera when I have some money.

  16. Rich Emery says:

that is AWESOME I wish I wish i could get myself a 7D

  17. Todd Fooshee says:

Fantastic. My one question though, i know you said that you recorded the audio w/ a boom mic, how good is the mic in the camera itself? I'm just thinking for random candid stuff to shoot that i wouldn't have access to a mic/boom.

  18. Brandon Wall says:

wow! shockingly good work!!! I'm on the verge of buying the 7D! do you know what lenses you guys used to shoot this?

  19. kashane says:

Wow is not enough…directing was awesome great more like amazing!..

  20. dennis says:

Awesome job on the vid man, the camera looks amazing. One question though is that a live background or are you using a green screen. Also at the end where the actual lights blur out the video, is that trapcode lux or the custom twitch settings you were talking about?

  21. Brilliant stuff, man! What you should say is actually significant and Im glad you took the time to share it. What you said genuinely spoke to me and I hope that I can study much more about this. Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. I’m however to get anything as enlightening as this about the web.
