My friend, Trent, showed me this video. I really felt it was blog worthy rather than just tweeting it. The video breaks down scenes and shows before and after green screen footy. It makes these shots seem so simple. I know there is an art to getting great looking compositing; but this video gives me hope that I can wrap my head around. Check it out and let me know what you think.

wow… i had no idea…
that shot from ugly betty where she walks into the bus stop was really impressive.
wow. great stuff.
That was incredible.
It does make it look simple, but all green screen stuff was probably not simple.
Thanks for sharing.
For sure! Not simple at all.. but gives a perspective that keeps it from feeling impossible!
What I find interesting about all of this is that there is no bounds to creativity.
That location or ideas cannot be stopped because technology provides you with a canvas that is open for your ideas.
That's incredible…some you'd never know…wow!
What impresses me most and can get taken for granted is not the removal/replacement of the background but the subject lighting. Not only must you figure out how the get them keyed you have to light them so they match as best as possible to your future digital set so you can try to minimize your post color correcting. Crazy man great video totally made my day on the creative possibilities scale =o)
Yeah! Matching the lighting is tough
Most of it is good, but some you can tell. It highlights the importance of getting the grading and tonal mappings right.
i'm floored to see some of this and realize it wasn't shot on location. Very impressive. Especially since I've just started an after effects class.
I think my favorite shot is the back alley behind the studio that they compose into a city block
WOW!! Impressive what a green screen can do. Also, I guess the actors actually can act.
I love doing the tracking part, but the Artwork involved in creating plates for background and set replacement is where I get hung up.
I feel as if I have been duped. That is amazing! So, you what do you think about that whole man on the moon thing?:-)
man that so incredible. I don't see how they sync up the shots of the people with the shots of the background. so mind blowing. but this definatly helps at least grasp how it's done. very amazing! I love this stuff!
Brandon, you can use 3d tracking software to sync the footage. Syntheyes and PF Hoe are relatively cheap alternatives for doing this type of camera tracking. Hollywood films use some Syntheyes but also more sophisticated programs (not exactly sure the name).
wow…. I have so much to learn. I love this stuff! so interesting!
We all do. The key is to be creative with what you know!
thanks for the knowledge, I'd love to see some more in depth videos like this… know of any others?
I don't. Sorry. Occasionally I see stuff like this linked to from motionographer.com
All I need to say is WOW! If we could pull 1/2 of that off as Christian producers the entire world would know Jesus!! i know that is a bit over stated but WOW!!
Why do I need a password to watch this?
