So my friend, Derek Cornell, organized this amazing event at a homeless shelter down in Dallas. He had several tons of snow brought in so the kids could have a big Christmas party. He helped raise money for blankets, pillows, food, and Christmas gifts for all the kids at the shelter. It was a great event and I was able to test the Igniter’s Canon 7d camera out while trying to learn some of the features.

I used the lense that comes with the kit ($2,300 for 7d, 50mm Zoom – 3.4, battery charger, and memory card). I reduced the footage to 720p – 24fps from 1080p – 24fps capture and included a shot at 60fps to check out the slo mow.

  1. Hey Barton,

Do you have a link to where I can see to purchase the Canon 7D? And also, there is also a 7D photograph camera, correct?

Barton, I picked you up off of GreyScale Gorilla and have been checkin out your style and love for Christ. Nice work. Nice marriage of your passions, and you are giving me real inspiration. As for the camera, since it is an SLR, i presume the audio capabilities are not so hot…thoughts?

Corwin. Thanks for your kind words!
As far as audio. I'm no expert. The audio in the clip above sounds good for capturing the overall environment of sound that is happening. At Igniter, we have been capturing audio separately onto the computer in our studio. We've not gone out of the studio for a shoot yet but Ryan has a good suggestion for portable audio capturing in the post comments from yesterday. I'll definitely be posting more thoughts and workflow for the audio this week.

    Nice Work Bart :)
Been a slow day at work today so I've been reading up on the 7D. Here's a sweet page over at Vimeo that should give you some nice inspiration of what others are shooting and some serious kit configurations.

Any word about recording video to an external hard drive for larger storage capabilities?

Have you used an auto focus lens in video mode? I imagine you probably can't/shouldn't…most SLR AF lenses are pretty noisy and would surely get picked up by the on-board mic…

I read this on the Cinema5D forum.

"You can use autofocus but it's the contrast-detect kind, it's slow, and if it has difficulties focusing (dark subject), it will temporaily overexpose your video, try to lock on something, and get back to normal exposure. In a word : don't use it!"

I've not. I was using manual focus – which at that DOF you really have to edit to get the great shots… lots of blur going on. A rack focus by hand (no tripod) would probably pretty tough.

Wow, the clarity is phenomenal! I just found out that SNL is now using 7D's in order to shoot video when in cramped places and are thinking about switching to it for all shoots. They did say the audio was an issue and have to record it separate. This is definitely a game changer (not a deal breaker for your 30 rock fans). Did you place any filters on that video?
