I first noticed these commercials when he used to say “I don’t normally drink beer. But when I do, I drink Dos Equis.” I thought it was genius marketing!  I’m not a fan of rip off videos in church but always thought it would be hilarious to play a video on Easter or Christmas for visitors that says “I don’t normally go to church. But when I do, I go to (insert your church  name here).” ha!!

I’ve been skateboarding forever (since the first Back To The Future). This version of the MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD is pretty amazing! (sorry Rollerbladers)

  1. Ben! Rip-off videos in church are called 'parodies', and are very effective. And I'm totally going to make that video!

Actually, I think most of the time 'rip-off' is a far more accurate term. A parody makes fun of something that exists for the pure sake of making fun of it. A rip-off takes an existing idea, and tries to market something else with it. And most of the time, they are pretty weak. Sadly, the church seems to foster this creative laziness.

I think the idea has merit, but you can back it up a lot further than copying a stock character with it. That's my opinion, anyway.

Okay, so in the spirit of spitballing, my wife and I knocked around some characters who would be the least likely to admit going to your/our church, who could say the lines above. ("I don't usually go to church…" etc.)

Think man on the street interview:
A pair of paramedics stopping for a chat; the bandaged guy on their stretcher's not doing so hot.
A random superhero on a busy sidewalk downtown, talking in his deep, ultra-sincere voice.
A mad scientist in a crazy lab, with bubbling, sparking stuff all 'round.
A convenience store clerk who takes himself waaaay too seriously.
A rough, tattooed prisoner sharing wistfully with a harmonica playing in the background.

There are unlimited stereotypes that you could pick up on, while not referencing anything in particular. You could make it go 15sec, or 15min.
