I have mixed emotions even talking about this type stuff because in some ways it seems so trivial compared to the mission of the church; but on the other hand, it can be a form of worship from those involved who go the extra mile and make things so excellent. Not everyone has big budgets, especially in this economy: but everyone can run wires together and tape them down nicely. Everyone can keep a clean stage and have it look nice and sharp. And most musicians can spend a little extra time preparing to worship and loose their music stands. Again, it’s trivial… but when you see it done well, it really communicates a commitment to worship on a whole different level. Here’s a shot from the COLLIDE BLOG showing the stage at Northside Christian Church. I immediately noticed how clean the stage is. Check out the lack of wires (there are no junky piles of wires). And my favorite that really tells me these guys don’t mess around when it’s time to worship… no music stands! That stage is clutter free!!! I dig.

I will agree with you on the clean stage and it is actually something I am sturggling with at our church. One of the things I am looking at doing is replacing wired mics with wireless. However, I am going back forth on the whole issue of should I spend $2500 on wireless mics just to get a cleaner stage. One day I say yes the next day I say no. More prayer is needed in that area.
The one thing I don't know that I agree with you is the music stands. However I don't disagree also! How's that for being commited? All of our musicians are volunteer and to expect them to learn every song is unrealistic at this point. While I would love it and I understand that it would enhance the worship service it is just not feasible at this point. They all work full time and have kids, etc… I am sure we can go back and forth on this one!
What we have done is we invested in an electronic music stand type system. I actually makes to stage look cleaner so there are not papers falling off stands, etc. It allows the worshp leader to change the pages for everybody.
For sure! I don't think I even agree with myself.
It is definitely a different level of production-excellence when those things are taken into account. No one's life will change because the stage is clean. But if my job is production, I have an obligation to consider those things and be doing my best with the resources I've been given.
As far as additional money for wireless mics… tough call. Many churches have a reason for needing wireless. Often their pastor preaches from a clean stage rather than hopping over wires and instruments. That would be a good thing to consider if that is your situation. It could be over kill in many cases.
My challenge in this post is to get us thinking about the FREE things we can do with a little extra effort.
I have seen this whole music stand issue start to be ridiculous, while it does give the stage a cleaner appearance It can also hinder the performance, the church I work at as an FOH engineer has recently instated a "no music stand" policy and It has lead to the loss of some of our best musicians (one with a Grammy nomination) simply because they do not have the time to memorize every song for a worship service. Professional musicians are skilled to read music and shouldn't be pressured to memorize every song. Consequently I find that the "tightness" of the worship has decreased, we need to take a step back and remember who and why we are worshiping, personally, seeing a music stand on stage does not hinder what I get from worshiping.
