I met Chance a few weeks ago while he was doing some live painting at an event. I loved his work and thought it would be perfect to have him do something for my boys room. I sent him a photo of their room with the current colors on the wall. I asked him to include a Nike dunk, a skateboard, basketball, football… and to put their names in the artwork some where. He killed it! Did a really great job! It’s now hanging in the kids room and we love it!

CONCERT VISUALS

I really enjoy creating visuals for concerts! Back in May, I created visuals for Toby Mac’s “Tonight.” Unfortunately, I’ve never had a chance to see my work live but this video clip shows the magnitude of the media! The motion work is not overly difficult in this song track but really works well for the live show. I had not seen this project in several months so it was cool to receive this link and watch it with fresh eyes.

Here is an opening countdown I created for the Newsboys. They began using it over the summer while touring various festivals. I haven’t seen it live either but would be cool as they said it really got the crowd going in anticipation. The whole countdown was 3 minutes long but I have reduced this preview to the last :30 seconds.

CROSS POINT DNA

It’s always great to work with clients who become good friends! Stephen Brewster is one of those guys. WEEKEND INSPIRATION: Kixpo

This summer has seen it’s share of great events around Dallas. This weekend was no exception. Kixpo was held downtown and proved to be inspirational for me, personally. In particular, I met Steven Cedre Jr., aka Sole Junkie. His work is so intricate – it’s phenomenal. Watched him paint in detail on some Nike’s with Acrylic paints. It’s so nice to get away from the computer and be inspired by guys like this!

Already Been Chewed (LLC tee design) got some love this weekend as well. Super encouraged to see people supporting ABC – guys like Dameon (the owner of Index) all the way to Jeremy Holmes who has one of the best styles in skateboarding:

COWBOYS STADIUM AD SPOT

I’m thrilled to know this Ad spot I created for Eddie Deen’s will be playing on the world’s largest LED screen! Not sure that I’ll ever see it in action considering I’ve never been to a football game in my life, but maybe some of my local Dallas friends will see it.

This spot is exciting to me for a few reasons. Mainly because I’m blown away that technology allows one guy – out of his house – to create 3d animation of this quality. That is a reflection on how much I love Maxon’s C4d… not boasting about my work. I have no render farm and one computer that I used for this with a 6 day turn around.

The client was so pleased with the spot that we developed a print and digital signage campaign from the video spot. See the motion work below along with the print Ad.

ABC Motion work hits Target shelves!

I’ve worked with The Kayo Corp for a couple years now (DGK, Expedition One, Gold Wheels, Organika). One of my first projects with them was the motion work for Concrete Jungle. Today, you can find it packaged with Tech Deck products at your local Target! I’m pretty stoked on that considering my son is the one who discovered it today while shopping with my wife! This weekend I was really inspired by some of the young talent in Dallas. My friend, Rob CaHill teamed up with Jorge (myspace.com/onforyourcity)Â and put on this event that combined all sorts of talent from graffiti artists to skateboarders and breakers. It’s crazy to see the amount of talent out there! I was really inspired and hope to offer some opportunities to work with some of these artists.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

How much does it cost to do to do a :30 promo video? or a logo animation? or a 2 minute informational video? Valid questions that can only be answered with a lot more information. I’ve worked on logo animations that took a few hours to produce… I’ve also worked on logo animations that took a few hours… PER SECOND. Here are some of the things to consider Â when trying to determine “how much” a motion piece will cost:

1. How much time is involved in developing the concept for the piece?
2. How much time is involved in the production of the concept?
3. Does the concept require a video shoot?
4. Does the concept require capturing professional audio on the video shoot?
5. Does the concept require the video shoot to be in a studio or in another environment where rental equipment/space is required? (green screen… shutting down a restaurant to do a shoot, etc.)
6. What type of custom graphics or 3 modeling will need to be created to support the concept?
7. Does the concept require purchasing stock photography, vector art or 3d models?
8. How much will royalty free music cost or obtaining the rights to other music?
9. Does the project require the help of outside resources? (i.e.- someone who is great with expressions or particle systems, possibly outsourcing to a render farm due to turn around time, etc. )
10. Does the client want more than 1 concept to choose from?
11. Does the project require actors or professional VO?

These are all great questions for everyone involved to consider whether you are the client, freelancer, or full time staff. “How much does it cost?” or “How long will it take?” can often be solved when answering some of these questions listed above. Many times, the deadline and the budget will work together to force the solution.

Here are 2 “logo animations” to consider. The first one took about 7 hours from no concept to completion. The 2nd one took 7 hours per second to produce.

OVER A DECADE AGO

My wife was doing some cleaning around the house and came across a bunch of my old work. Hard to believe this stuff is over 10 years old. Some of it dates all the way back to 1995. Kind of fun to see it now after all these years collecting dust in storage.

The top piece was actually done entirely in photoshop using the airbrush tool. I don’t think I even sketched it out on paper! Just started airbrushing. ha ha.

The next piece in green is all done using black and white charcoal on green paper.

The very bottom piece was a hard shadow piece done using acrylic paints.

CBS SHOW OPENER

I was privileged to work with the Holden Production group to create this show opener that aired on CBS over the weekend. The project was incredible to work on with Tim Johnson, executive producer, and his crew. The project was a super tight turn around, I received 2 hard drives full of footage on a Wednesday and had to get concept, style frames, music and final approval for the show opener completed by following Monday (3 business days later). The package included show opener, lower thirds, bugs, and transitions. Fortunately, Tim was able to get approval quickly and, of course, I cranked on this over that weekend in order to have everything done on time – before jumping on an airplane to go to Gurus!

This is definitely one of those projects where I’m proud of what was accomplished within the time frame given, but would’ve loved to pour a lot more into it. Regardless, I got to (legally) create a video using a Jimi Hendrix song as the track so I can’t complain!
